Parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP) is supportive psychotherapy intended to promote positive bonding experiences in the parent-infant relationship and to strengthen attachment.
We work directly with the parent and infant together (if born) and the relationship between the two is at the centre of the therapy.
We work with parents expecting a baby and with babies up to the age of two years old.
We build on the strengths of parents while recognising the challenges they face in developing a positive relationship with their infant. We support parents when they struggle to relate to or have any positive feelings about their babies.
Parent-Infant Psychotherapy aims at helping primary carers to:
observe their baby;
try to think about how the baby is feeling and what he/she might be trying to tell them through his/ her sounds and body movements;
share their thoughts;
trying out different ways of responding to the baby;
feel more positively about themselves and the interaction with their baby.
This type of intervention is suitable for mothers and fathers who are:
suffering from low mood, esteem, and confidence in parenting;
experiencing difficult feelings during pregnancy and in the weeks after the baby has been born;
struggling to find what feels like the right love for your baby;
recovering from postnatal depression or perinatal psychosis;
looking around at other happy parents and wondering why you can't be happy;
recovering from a challenging birth;
an adoptive parent who would like support in developing their relationship with their new baby;
recovering from post adoption depression;
adjusting to life with twins or triplets or multiples;
impacted by a traumatic event;
finding responsibility of parenting overwhelming.
