"Our first five years lay important foundations for our future selves. This period is when we first learn to manage our emotions and impulses, to care and to empathise, and thus ultimately to establish healthy relationships with ourselves and others."
HRH, Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge
Sound Foundations was set up in 2021 after the sad loss of the much loved charity, The Northamptonshire Parent Infant Partnership leaving the community without access to the "Rare Jewel" of Parent Infant Therapeutic support (Rare Jewels - Parent-Infant Foundation (parentinfantfoundation.org.uk). Our founders were inspired to create a fresh, innovative way of providing community led support services for Babies and Young Children and their families to give them the best start in life.
Being able to offer specialist therapeutic support to both expectant parents and new parents and infants helps to foster and develop stable and healthy attachment relationships at the very beginning potentially for the first time. Our service provides a safe space to be able to explore not only existing parental trauma related to their own childhoods, but also to best equip expectant and new parents to be able to recognise and meet the needs of their infants. Most people want to be the best parents they can, our service helps to empower people with the skills they need to be able to do just that and build sound foundations.
Infants do not have a voice, they are entirely dependent on their care givers for all of their care and development yet there is a wealth of research and evidence which outlines how vitally important 'a good enough' start in life is (Best Start in Life, Early Intervention the next steps, Every Child Matters, 1001 critical days) Our service holds the infant in mind, it provides a space for the infant to be thought about, held and heard. Doing this, reduces the need for professional intervention later on in life, it builds better, healthier family relationships for families with the greatest need. By investing in infant mental health, we are able to support two generations, potentially three: by working with both the infant and the primary caregiver, we are able to help to ensure that the infant grows up in a stable and loving environment with care givers who have the skills to both recognise and be able to meet their needs. This in turn helps the child to develop healthy and appropriate relationships growing up and go on to foster these values in their own children one day..
"For children to reach their full potential and make their blueprint a reality they need the right materials: a healthy and emotionally stable early environment enriched with opportunities and resources for growth, learning and development. "(The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood Report: Big Change Starts Small, June 2021)
"It is vital that every new parent and carer has access to compassionate and timely mental health support if they need it, from the moment they find out their baby is on the way." (The Best Start for Life, HM Government, 2021)
